Tom Harris’ first published book, Your Neighbour Kills Puppies is released March 2024 with Pluto Press.

It is the previously untold story of one of the world’s most powerful social justice campaigns, Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC).

SHAC was an anti-vivisection campaign aimed at closing the largest animal testing laboratory in Europe, HLS. As a key participant and organiser, Tom Harris demonstrates a unique insight into this remarkable campaign.

Featuring inside accounts from those at the heart of the fifteen-year campaign, this book charts an epic story of compassion, desperation, and defiance across twenty-six countries and every inhabited continent on earth.

From a field in Herefordshire to Manhattan boardrooms, follow the path that led SHAC from protest to resistance, only to find themselves on the end of severe repression.

Incarcerated in Japanese prisons, starved in Ryker’s Island, and dragged from their beds at gunpoint, this is the true story of how much a small group of activists from across the globe were willing to sacrifice in an attempt to close Europe’s largest animal testing laboratory.

As an undercover police officer I was used to dealing with drugs Organised Crime. But I was asked to infiltrate a group of people whose goal was to rescue beagles from experimentation, or to fight similar abuses. It was explained to me that this was to protect the economy and secure future investment from companies that rely on animal cruelty. I refused this request but many other undercover officers became embedded in such protest movements. As Tom Harris exposes in this book, when big business directs our policing and our wider legal system, it should terrify us all
